Classes
Our swimming classes in St Albans cater for children of age 3 1/2 years upwards and are suitable for complete beginners through to pre competitive levels. Children progress through the stages based on ability and are not restricted by age. We are ASA certified and the awards run from Stage 1 through to Gold.

Stage 1
Swimmers will develop basic movement skills, water confidence and safety awareness. Swimmers will be able to use aids e.g. arm bands and floats to help complete this stage.
Stage 2
Swimmers will develop safe entries to the water and will continue to practice floating, travel and rotation in the water. Swimmers can still use aids e.g. arm bands and floats to help complete this stage.
Stage 3
Swimmers work towards being able to swim 10m on their front and back and will be able to swim underwater to collect objects from the bottom of the pool. Rotation skills and water safety knowledge will also be developed.
Stage 4
Swimmers will focus on refining kicking techniques for all four strokes and develop a better understanding of buoyancy.
Stage 5
Swimmers will focus on swimming all four strokes – Front Crawl, Back Stroke, Breast Stroke and Butterfly. Swimmers will also develop skills in sculling, treading water and complete rotation.
Stage 6
Swimmers will focus on developing effective swimming skills including co-ordinated breathing, water safety and an understanding of how to prepare for exercise.
Adult lessons
Swimming lessons for adults that are beginners who want to learn to swim and for those who want to improve their technique, are thinking of taking on a swimming challenge or just for fitness.
Stage 7
Swimmers will develop quality stroke technique whilst swimming up to 100m.
Beginner classes for older children and teenagers
Swimming lessons for older children and teenagers that have not learnt to swim yet and don’t want to be in a class with younger children. These classes run along side our adult lessons.
Swimming Challenge Awards
Bronze
The Bronze Swimming Challenge award tests a number of areas including (but not limited to) the swimmer being able to swim 400 metres using only two strokes and treading water in a vertical position for three minutes.
Silver
The Silver Swimming Challenge award tests a number of areas including (but not limited to) swimming 100 metres in less than three minutes using any stroke and the ability to swim 800 metres: 400 metres on the front and 400 metres on the back.
Gold
In brief this award includes swimming 800 metres using three of the following strokes: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly for a minimum distance of 200 metres per stroke. This swim to be completed in 25 minutes.
Complete Swimmer
Complete swimmer awards are for those children that want to keep fit and push themselves that little bit more without the competitive side of swimming.
Personal survival
Personal survival comprises of two levels and among other things includes treading water, holding the help position and answering questions on when the skills learned might be used.
